What you need:
Watercolor Paper (or cardstock, but you can use printer paper if that's all you have!)
Liquid Glue (can be plain or clear)
Salt
Project Prep (Do this the day before or in the morning on the day you plan to paint):
Start by drawing a snowflake shape on your paper- use a template or freehand your design. This project works best on watercolor paper, but you can also use cardstock.
Place your design in a shallow tray. While the glue is still wet, sprinkle table salt over the entire snowflake design. Shake off any excess salt from the paper.
Let the glue and salt dry completely. This may take some time, so be patient.
Once your snowflake is dry:
Set up your watercolor paints with a small glass of water and some paper towels.
Use a paintbrush to apply the watercolor paints. Just a small touch of your brush will allow the paint to seep into the salt and spread. Try applying many different colors to watch the colors bleed and blend.
Focus on coloring your salty snowflake first, but once that is complete you can go on to paint the surrounding areas to create a colorful background.
TIP:For extra fun, after painting the background of the snowflake design with your watercolors, sprinkle a smallamount of salt on top of the wet paint and allow it to dry. Once dry, brush off the salt grains for a fun effect. |
