What you need:

Project Prep (Do this the day before or in the morning on the day you plan to paint):

  • Start by drawing a snowflake shape on your paper- use a template or freehand your design. This project works best on watercolor paper, but you can also use cardstock.

  • Place your design in a shallow tray. While the glue is still wet, sprinkle table salt over the entire snowflake design. Shake off any excess salt from the paper.

  • Let the glue and salt dry completely. This may take some time, so be patient.

Once your snowflake is dry:

  • Set up your watercolor paints with a small glass of water and some paper towels.

  • Use a paintbrush to apply the watercolor paints. Just a small touch of your brush will allow the paint to seep into the salt and spread. Try applying many different colors to watch the colors bleed and blend.

  • Focus on coloring your salty snowflake first, but once that is complete you can go on to paint the surrounding areas to create a colorful background.

TIP:For extra fun, after painting the background of the snowflake design with your watercolors, sprinkle a smallamount of salt on top of the wet paint and allow it to dry. Once dry, brush off the salt grains for a fun effect.
